Narrative During Books Andromaque
Rating About Books Andromaque

Romeo and Juliet who? This is single-handedly the best classic romantic tragedy I've read in my life. Fantastic![Français ci-dessus]Qui sont Roméo et Juliette? L'histoire ici est la meilleure tragédie/romance classique que j'ai lue. 10/10.Racine does write the best tragedies. I never enjoy reading a French book as much as when I read one of his plays, they truly make me connect to my own language and I think this is really beautiful. (And he also chooses the best stories.)

In the introduction to the Penguin edition to this play, John Cairncross states that One can hardly hope to do justice to Racine unless one is bilingual, or practically so. For he yields his secrets to the Anglo-Saxon reader far less readily than, say, Dante or Goethe, owing in part to the weakness of the tonic accent in French, and above all to the difference of the conventions governing his poetry and ours. In Andromache, fate is anonymous and vindictive. It is an ever-present trait of each
Nice workout for my college French- whole experience far from modern sensibilities.
The afterward notes that this is a play about love as a fatal illness, I believe it depicts love as a pure virtue. The three characters, Orestes, Pyrrhus and Hermione, who express unrequited love are each faced with tragedy in the end, but their feelings did not encapsulate true love. Their passions reached a point where they consented to inflicting harm on those they were pursuing in order to satisfy their own personal desires. It was only Andromache that expressed true love, for both her son
A few weeks earlier I read Andromache by Euripides https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... Racine writes this over a millennium later, its a modified version of a tragedy at full throttle driven by unrequited love. This has a feel of todays drama as Andromache stays to the end of the play. This plays first purpose is to entertain. What gives this play depth is the love dynamics of unrequited love. Orestes loves Hermione who is in love with her husband Neoptolemus who is in love with Andromache.
