Cross and Burn (Tony Hill & Carol Jordan #8)
Someone is killing women. Women who bear an unsettling resemblance to Carol Jordan. And when the evidence begins to point in a disturbing direction, thinking the unthinkable seems the only possible answer.
Cornered by events, Tony and Carol are forced to fight for themselves and each other as never before.
The prevailing school of thought on the Tony Hill and Carol Jordan series seems to advise reading the outings in sequential order. Whilst I had read the novel which follows this, I had not read any of the previous outings yet managed to easily follow this one thanks to a succinct recap from Val McDermid. Admittedly though the starting point for much of the early detail that McDermid conveys is past events, serving to provide clarity on the working relationships of former DCI Carol Jordan's now
A fascinating follow up to the devastating events of the previous book in the series. The MIT is scattered and separate, and in some cases never wanting to have anything to do with each other again. But the spreading tendrils of a serial criminal gradually bring them back in contact. In many ways I felt Jordan and Hill were the least interesting characters in this book. Tony, in particular, often comes off as a somewhat pathetic stalker. But as with all of McDermids books, the plot(s) are enough

My first Val McDermid mystery thriller, and I was not disappointed. Coming in at at book #8 was not the easiest especially this one as the story was a continuation of the previous book. We join our leads in the aftermath of their last investigation, which was disastrous, to say the least. Carol Jordan has quit and taken off on her own and the others are rudderless. Most of the story is through the eyes of Paula McIntyre, who has joined a new team. The dead body of a woman is found, one of
I've always enjoyed reading Val McDermid, although it's been a while now, so when I saw this one I really wanted to enjoy it too. It was ok. It just about kept my interest but it felt tired, as if Val was just going through the motions to keep her publishers happy with yet another Tony Hill moneyspinner. The author has a problem with Tony Hill, and she's well aware of what it is because I heard her say so in person more than ten years ago. He was intended to be a one-off, in a standalone book The
Someone is abducting and murdering women around Bradfield. And not just any women. For the one thing they all have in common is that they look just like ex DCI Carol Jordan. Is this someone whos determined to capture Carol for themselves, or does she just fit their MO? Okay gory books galore at the moment. I liked this one; in fact I always enjoy crime books where there are point of view chapters from both the characters that are pursuing the case, and from the criminals themselves. Maybe I was

As a writer I am in awe of both the quality and quantity of Val McDermid's novels. As a reader I revel in both. Several of her books including Torment of Others and The Skeleton Road are reviewed on this site: https://bookreviewstoday.info/2013/05... and https://bookreviewstoday.info/2016/07.... I bought Cross and Burn the last time I met Val at the Bloody Scotland Crime Writers' Festival in Stirling, Scotland, 2016. It is the eighth book in her series about Tony Hill and Carol Jordan.
