Definitely one of the great pieces of storytelling in the Italian 20th century. A wonderful and wonderfully elusive book. As with other works by Bassani, the translation leaves a lot to be desire, but it's still a great read.Not painful to read, but also not very much 'fun'. It flows, yes, but nothing much happens. So The Drama between the unnamed narrator and Micòl, the object of his (non-reciprocated) affection. I don't see what the big fuss is about with this book. Maybe I just don't get it? I don't know. Perhaps.

It is impossible not to love this novel about a young Jewish man living in Italy during WWII who falls in love with a woman who ultimately rejects him. She and her lover die in the concentration camps. Our hero has the beautiful wisdom to understand that his disappointment was dwarfed by the tragedy that befell the woman who disdained him and his successful rival.
