Although I eventually got impatient with the pace, there were many things I liked about this book. Our hero, Mario, a lustful 18-year-old, is smitten with Julia, his uncles divorced 32-year-old sister-in-law (consistently referred to as Aunt Julia, reminding us of their age difference and relationship and cleverly highlighting the absurdity of the situation). The two of them embark on an impossible romance. Meanwhile, Mario is also developing an intellectual fascination with Pedro Camacho, the

I read this after The Time Of The Hero and was relieved by the simpler narrative form with its clear alteration between the narrator, presumably loosely based on the author, who is pursuing a romantic relationship with his aunt (view spoiler)[their actual degree of consanguinity is not as close as the word 'aunt' implies (hide spoiler)] and the radio soap opera story episodes written by the eponymous scriptwriter, who eventually crashes over into a nervous breakdown.The narrative paths progress

Also during my Beijing trip, I was able to read and finish 2010 Nobel Prize for Literature winner Mario Vargas Llosas Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. I am familiar with other writers from South America, but this is my first venture into Llosas universe (the book was a gift from a good friend of mine).
